Foam

LC-Foam is lightweight polyurethane foam specially formulated to provide excellent sound absorption over a wide frequency spectrum. It can be easily formed into shape using relatively low cost tooling.

Whilst LC-Foam can be used in its plain form it can also be laminated to a wide range of protective or decorative facings during the forming operation. This ensures that a well engineered and high quality product can be produced very economically.

The variety of facings available make LC-Foam components suitable for a host of vehicle interior and engine compartment applications.

Absorber Fibre

HAPPICH absorber fibre is available in a wide variety of thicknesses, densities & colours. It can be used as both an acoustic absorber and thermal insulator. Especially formulated from a mixture of high & low melt fibres it provides excellent sound absorption over a wide frequency spectrum. It can also be easily formed into shape using relatively low cost tooling. Whilst Polyester can be used in its basic self coloured form of either White, grey, green or black it can also be laminated to a wide range of protective or decorative facings.

Flexible Acoustic Barrier

Our Acoustic Barrier material is specially formulated to provide excellent sound insulation over a wide frequency spectrum. It can be easily cut to shape with a sharp knife or scissors. Alternatively we can supply material die cut into dedicated shapes. This material is available in a variety of densities and thicknesses. Whilst the material can be used in its plain form it can also be supplied laminated to a wide range of other materials including protective facings and spacer layers such as foam, felt or polyester. All combinations are also available with a pressure sensitive adhesive backing if required. Significant levels of noise reduction can be achieved by creating a well-sealed barrier using heavy layer barrier materials particularly those with limp characteristics. The introduction of a spacer layer beneath the heavy layer to achieve a ‘decoupler-mass’ will also help to improve the performance of the barrier.

Vibration Damping

HAPPICH vibration damping materials have been developed to provide solutions to noise problems eliminating from resonance in sheet metal structures. Damping pads can be manufactured from a wide range of product types including Bitumen and PVA both of which are available in differing thicknesses and densities. Components are supplied with a self-adhesive backing and to your desired shape using low cost tooling. Product can also be supplied in large sheet form or handy packs of 10 small rectangular pads 500mm x 200mm.

Acoustic performance
The principle function of vibration damping material is to reduce the natural frequency at which a material is excited and encouraged to act as a secondary noise source. The degree of damping is typically measured as either loss factor or decay rate. The type thickness and weight of a damping material will affect its performance. Performance will also depend upon the type thickness and weight of the material to which it is being applied and the temperature at which it is operating. Typical decay rate for a 5 kg/m2 Bitumen based material 2.5 mm thick at 20°C is 35 dB/sec. PVA damping material will achieve a similar performance at about half of this thickness and density. To select a material with the best characteristics for your individual requirements please contact our technical department. Dense damping materials can also be used as an effective noise barrier and will perform in a similar way to our flexible barrier products range. VersaPanel

The VersaPanel Concept represents a major advance in the design of noise control materials. The Standard version employs a highly efficient sound absorbing core and combines the virtues of dissipative and micro-perforation technology in a single product. The inclusion of our ‘VariFoil’ micro perforated aluminium foil outer covering protects the core materials ensures a high level of fire resistance and enables the acoustic performance to be tuned. This means that by selecting the correct panel type or mix of panel types the Versapanel can be tailored to provide optimum noise absorption over a particular noise spectrum. Most VersaPanels also act as excellent heat shields and provide high levels of thermal insulation.

Versatility
The unique design of the VersaPanel enables acoustic absorption to be introduced into areas of complicated geometry by the simply adaptation of a standard rectangular panel. This principle ensures a well engineered yet economical solution is achieved. Modifications can be undertaken using conventional hand tools.

Application
For the control of noise and heat in the engine compartment particularly in passenger transport, off highway, material handling and marine applications.

Standard VersaPanel


are supplied at a standard size of 1195 x 850 x 25 mm but can be easily cut and folded to accommodate most desired treatment areas.

Installation
When installing products that provide acoustic absorption only it is not necessary to cover an entire area. In simple terms the object is to cover as much available area as practical and to distribute the absorption material as extensively as possible.

Technical details
  • Fire resistance: ISO 3795, ISO 9094-1:2003 & ISO 9094-2002 when tested in accordance with the appropriate standard
  • Max operating temperature: 180°C
  • Chemical resistance: VersaPanels are resistant to most contaminates that they will normally encounter in engine compartment applications
  • Cleaning: VersaPanels can be jet washed and steam cleaned using conventional equipment.

VariFoil

HAPPICH VariFoil can be used independently or as a facing material for both acoustic and thermal insulation materials. It is available in a wide range of thicknesses and can be manufactured from aluminium alloy, aluminised steel or stainless steel. VariFoil is micro perforated, so unlike solid foils which reflect noise VariFoil, absorbs it. This noise absorption is achieved through a combination of dissipative and Helmholtz absorption.
Whilst best performance can be obtained using an absorption medium (such as HAPPICH LC-Foam) behind the foil even if there is no traditional absorption material present the micro-perforations will enable a level of noise absorption to be achieved simply by spacing the foil away from the surface behind and establishing an air gap. It is also possible to achieve higher levels of noise absorption by using more than one layer of VariFoil with spacing in between. Availability
VariFoil can be supplied in sheet or roll form and is available with a hot melt adhesive backing if required. VariFoil is also available without perforations if required but will have virtually no noise absorbing properties.

VariFoil is manufactured at a standard width of 1000mm before perforating and embossing. Sheet materials are available up to 1400mm in length or in roll form as limited by the weight of the roll.

CustomPanel - 2D

The 2D (Flat Back) CustomPanel can be designed and manufactured to suite your precise requirements. Whether this be size, shape, acoustic performance or heat resistance. There are also choices of outer protective covering and noise absorbing core. Standard coverings include non woven synthetic fleece and our unique VariFoil micro-perforate aluminium foil. Core materials range from glass/mineral fibre through to cotton or synthetic felt or foam our high performance yet impervious noise absorber. The CustomPanel represents a major advance in the design of noise control systems as it can be individually tailored to cope with most environmental conditions and noise control requirements. In selected situations CustomPanels can incorporate the virtues of dissipative membrane and micro-perforated technology in a single component. This means that CustomPanels can be tuned to provide optimum noise absorption over a particular noise spectrum. In addition Custom- Panels can incorporate an integral noise barrier layer to improve the sound transmission properties

Tooling
Because the 2D CustomPanel has a flat back tooling costs are kept to a minimum. This is because the tool only has to be formed on one side. Even with a flat back CustomPanels can be cleverly designed to fold into quite complex three dimensional shapes.

CustomPanel - 3D

The 3D (Three Dimensional) CustomPanel can be designed and manufactured to suite your precise requirements. Whether this be size, shape, acoustic performance or heat resistance. There are also choices of outer protective covering and noise absorbing core. Standard coverings include non woven synthetic fleece and our unique VariFoil (tuneable) micro-perforate aluminium foil. Core material options include glass fibre, cotton felt, polyurethane foam and absorber fibre. Unlike the 2D CustomPanel both sides of the 3D panel are formed into a three dimensional shape. This enables even the most complex geometry to be catered for. The design can also be tailored to cope with most environmental conditions and noise control requirements. When faced with VariFoil the virtues of micro-perforation technology can be exploited and components can be tuned to optimise noise absorption.

Tooling
Because both surfaces of the 3D CustomPanels require forming full male and female tooling is required.

Prototype manufacture
If evaluation of a concept is desired prior to series production it is usually possible to produce prototypes using low cost tooling.


Combinations of covering material can be used to create heat resistant areas on a component (without loss of noise absorption).

  • Operating temperature: CustomPanels can be designed to cope with extreme temperatures often encountered in the vicinity of turbo chargers and catalytic converters.
  • Chemical resistance: CustomPanels are resistant to most contaminates that they will normally encounter in engine compartment applications.
  • Cleaning: VariFoil-faced CustomPanels can be jet washed and steam cleaned using conventional equipment.

Heat Insulation

Noise absorbing heat shields offer all of the benefits of conventional thermal heat shields; in addition, however, they can reduce noise radiation by up to 50%. They are effective for both pass-by and interior noise reduction and can be supplied as either flat sheet, fabricated parts or as fully molded components. Unlike conventional heat shields that have hard reflective surfaces which intensify noise; our designs are based upon unique ‘Vari-Foil’ embossed micro-perforated metallic foil which absorbs it.‘Vari-Foil’ is available in aluminum for low temperature applications <500oC. For higher temperature applications we offer aluminized or stainless steel options.
